NCEA Art Portfolios
2013
My work for my level 3 NCEA painting folio is based on the concept of dreams, nightmares and trying to escape from my own mind. I've used the stories of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll as inspiration, using images of my friends and myself to portray a few of the classic characters to make it more personal to me. I use acrylic paints, coffee, pencil, ink pen and indian ink. Artist models - Rene Magritte, Alex Gross and Joanna Braithwaite. Sadly this project will remain unfinished because I left school early due to sickness and was not able to complete it. |

My work for my level 2 NCEA art folio is based on the concept of society and structure being broken down by creativity and love. Each object is a symbol for something that relates to this concept. I used images of my partner and I to resemble human beings. The chess board symbolises the structure of society crumbling away. The chess pieces are people, there are kings and queens and pawns but in reality we are all the same and we are all being manipulated by the players of the game. The dice represent the idea of chance and luck. The mushrooms show an altered state of reality where nothing is as it seems, also their roots grow and spread like a disease just as humans do on the earth. The clocks symbolize time passing, and the illusion of time. Feathers are a symbol of freedom, for those who want to break away from the structure and laws of our society.
I used mixed media; pencil, acrylic paint, scratch-back gesso/crayon and ink pen. My main artist model's were Salvador Dali and Alex Gross.
I received an excellence for my folio, excellence endorsement for this subject and also got the top award for my year group in art.

My work for my level 1 NCEA art folio is about what I viewed as my identity. At the time I was confused and felt trapped in my body and in my current situation as I was discovering my identity and developing it. I think any adolescent can relate to this feeling. My folio explores all the negative emotions that teenagers feel as they grow from children into young adults. I used images of myself when I was a 12 to 15 to show who I was and who I was becoming, alongside the dark angelic/demonic beings that symbolize what I felt like on the inside. The chains represent that trapped feeling, the X's represent structure, and the theatre masks show that I didn't know who I was or how I really felt underneath it all. I used lyrics from Evanescence songs to describe my thoughts, and words that I felt others described me as.
I used mixed media; pencil, paint, collage, scratch-back gesso/crayon, ink pen, screen-printing and concrete.
I received an excellence for my folio, excellence endorsement and got the top award for level 1 art.
